As feminists, we support equal rights for everyone, that includes LBGTQIA people. The 9 (at least, probably much more than we’ll ever realize) teenagers that committed suicide within the past four weeks shows how important the fight for equality is and although this tumblr focuses on reproductive rights and pro-choice issues, this is something that Rabble supports. Completely.
Homophobic harassment has become institutionalized, not just in our schools but by our government leaders, peers, often family members, church organizations, and employers. It is not acceptable to encourage the harassment of others because of sexual orientation just like it is not acceptable to harass others for body shape, ethnicity, religion, or gender.
If you or someone you know might be having thoughts of suicide please don’t ignore that. Reach out and help each other. If you don’t think there’s anyone to talk to, there is:
The Trevor Project is a suicide hotline specifically aimed at LGBTQIA youth. You can visit their website to chat online with someone about what you’re going through or call 866.488.7386.
Hopeline was founded by the Kristin Brooks Hope Center and is often advertised on Post Secret. Their phone number is 1-800-SUICIDE.
The It Gets Better Project is a project meant to inspire hope in LGBTQIA youth. Videos from people of all walks of life have made videos letting LGBTQIA kids know that it gets better. Watching just one of those videos might give someone hope. Please feel free to share them, make one of your own and upload it, and spread the word.
Please don’t hesitate to call them or use these websites as resources to help friends you think might be in crisis.
Love,
Rabble
(PS. Please reblog this post so as many people as possible can see these resources and phone numbers)
